I read a statement by a leading health expert recently that 95% of all disease is caused by stress.
Think about that. Stress causes illness, and illness eventually leads to death if it isn’t corrected.
Stress accumulates. It gathers around us invisibly at first. If we’re perceptive, we might detect it as tension in our jaw or an inability to sit still or pain in our lower back. Maybe we snap at our kids or can’t stop and listen to our neighbor without thinking about the million and one things on our to-do list.
If we don’t listen to the warning signals of stress, then it eventually tries to get our attention more forcefully. This is where fights and accidents happen.
The thing is, so much of this is preventable.
Are you pursuing a practice that helps alleviate and dissipate the stress in your life?
Start by getting rid of what you don’t need. The stressful things that clamor for your attention that you simply don’t need around anymore don’t need to stick around anymore. You can release them.
Then, start figuring out what works for you to really get down deep into the roots of stress in your life. Is it meditation? Massages? Periodic walks in the woods?
Whatever it is, do more of that.
Slowly but surely, watch out for stress and minimize it. With some luck, you’ll prevent all sorts of unfortunate stress-related experiences that would have only caused you extra stress.
